SM Southpoint: Your New Hangout Opens

If there’s one city outside of Manila that can make anyone indecisive on where to eat, it’s got to be Iloilo City. The million dollar question of “Where do you want to eat?” that boyfriends ask their girlfriends just got harder. With the opening of SM Southpoint, the boyfriends are instantly covered for a year of date night dining options.

Last November 11, SM Southpoint officially opened to the public. The day started with a Holy Mass followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by SM’s Hans Sy and the new tenants.

SM Southpoint is a 2-storey expansion building connected to the main mall with a bridge at the second floor. It is entirely a dining strip with both air-conditioned and al-fresco areas just like other recent developments in the city. It’s pretty obvious by now that Ilonggos hate being cramped and confined. With a mini park, garden, and a fountain, this is definitely a perfect new hangout for the locals.

Without a doubt, the best part of my day was when we had the chance to sit down and listen to Mr. Hans Sy. It was an impromptu interview. He simply went inside Bo’s Coffee after being told the media hoped to have a short interview with him. He lined up and ordered his brew and sat down and waited for the questions.

"I liken SM to my father who is standing on top of a snow mountain wherein he started to do that snowball and let it roll down. You know, a snowball, as it goes down the snow, it becomes bigger and bigger. Over the last 30 years,  it's still the same snowball, just bigger and bigger." - SM's Hans Sy, son of business magnate Henry Sy What an inspiring morning. Today, #SMSouthpoint opens.

What an inspiring morning. Today, #SMSouthpoint opens.

On the continuous expansion of SM Iloilo he said, “I saw potential in here that’s why we immediately put up the BPO Tower. By first quarter of next year, we start the 200-bedroom Park Inn Hotel.” He sees SM Southpoint as a place where people will converge, spend their night away, and have fun. He says that the open park feeling is the advantage of the new expansion. “We have so much land. We can afford to really be a bit more generous. I don’t want it to become like an urban jungle in the future,” he adds.

To cap off his interview with us, he shared with us his family’s mantra: There is no replacement for hard work. Learning from his father, he says that it’s always 50% hard work, 40% guts, and 10% luck. SM is my favorite mall and to be able to meet someone who is a huge part of its success is a great privilege – a chance encounter that I will never forget.

Because the boyfriend is away, you’ll probably see me with these people most often – trying out each of the restaurants, old and new, at SM Southpoint. After all, it’s going to be our new favorite hangout! 😉
