Celebrating the Moon Festival at The Promenade

Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year celebrates the full moon as the symbol of reunion, harmony, and happiness.

Yesterday, I had a blast because I had lunch with my blogger friends at The Promenade. In the middle of it all, it just appeared to me that I didn’t have any idea what the Moon Festival was all about. So, I read a little about it.

On the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, the moon is believed to be at its roundest and brightest and it also happens to be in the middle of the autumn season. Because they believe that the moon brings them good luck, families offer sacrifices to the moon. They offer mooncakes and symbolic fruits while watching the bright moon if the weather is good. In the ancient times, the Chinese emperors worship the moon in autumn to show them gratitude for the harvest as the ordinary people take it as a celebration of their hard work.

On the evening of the Moon Festival, the Chinese gather together with the extended family at the grandparents’ home and they spend the whole afternoon preparing regional festival food for the dinner.

The mooncake is the main festival food because Chinese people see in the roundness of mooncakes a symbol of reunion and happiness. Most people also serve and delight themselves in their freshest and most nutritious round foods at this time. So it was just appropriate for us to take advantage of the sumptuous buffet at The Promenade.
